Energy-efficient Dornbirn site: Zumtobel Group committed to renewable energy
  • Largest photovoltaic installation in Vorarlberg
  • Installation of 4,500 solar panels
  • Energy-saving potential equivalent to annual power consumption of 300 households’
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions by 125 tonnes each year

The lighting company Zumtobel Group is building a photovoltaic system on its site in Dornbirn. It will be the first industrial enterprise to build such a system, which will also be the largest in Vorarlberg to date. The installation comprises 4,500 solar panels with a total output of 1,250 kWp, which will make a sustainable contribution to the site’s energy consumption.

Refinancing thanks to energy cost savings
Covering a surface area of approximately 7,500 m2, the number of 4,500 solar panels will be installed in a modular design on the rooftops of two production halls in Schweizerstraße. This will enable the facility to cover a significant proportion of its own energy demand in the future. The Zumtobel Group is the first industrial enterprise in Vorarlberg with a photovoltaic system of this size. Over the next 15 years, it will be able to refinance itself thanks to the savings it makes on energy costs. The lighting manufacturer from Vorarlberg will achieve this with the help of contracting company EQ-Systems and its General Manager Andreas Bickel, who is supervising the entire project, from financing and delivery through to installation and maintenance. The plans for the system are the brainchild of Emanuel Gstach, owner of the engineering firm ee-consult, and Alexander Netzer.

“System installation will commence at the beginning of August and is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2018. We are looking forward to carrying out this project at our Dornbirn site, which will allow us to make an active and important contribution to sustainability across the region”, says Markus Kronenwett, Plant Manager at Dornbirn.

Reduction of CO2 emissions
Apart from reducing the site’s energy consumption, the new photovoltaic system will also reduce annual CO2 emissions by 125 tonnes. This translates to roughly 1.32 million kilometres driven by car or 33 circumnavigations of the Earth. With this, the Zumtobel Group is not only promoting sustainable energy conservation but also contributing to the state of Vorarlberg’s long-term energy autonomy 2050 plan.

“The installation of a photovoltaic system on our premises is a clear commitment to the sustainable use of energy. Thanks to the installation, we will be able to generate 1,155 MWh of energy for our own needs. This is roughly equivalent to the average annual consumption of 300 households,” says Uwe Baireder, Head of Operating Technology at the Zumtobel Group.

Zumtobel Group – ÖKOPROFIT® business
In May 2018, for the twenty-fourth time running the Zumtobel Group was awarded the ÖKOPROFIT® environmental certification for its environmentally-friendly manufacturing procedures at the Dornbirn site. This underlines the company’s ongoing commitment to making an active contribution to regional sustainability. With its new photovoltaic system, the Zumtobel Group is setting an example yet again and reaffirming its dedication to the Dornbirn site
